I thought I'd kick this list off with an introduction and a bit of background. The list arose out of the discussions held at the Internet Healthcare Coalition (IHC) conference on October 13 1999 in New York City. One of the roundtable chats held at the conference was "Personal Medical Records on the Internet: Privacy, Security and Confidentiality Issues". As is always the case there was inadequate time to discuss the many issues raised. I, after consultation with Dean Sittig (who led the discussion at the IHC conference), decided to set up this list to provide an ongoing and expanded forum to continue discussion on these and any other issue related to medical records on the Net. The list is unmoderated and is open for discussion on any topic that members put forward. Membership is open to anyone wanting to participate. There are currently 40 members on the list. It seems to me that most are health or IT professionals. From the discussions in NYC it is my impression that patients/healthcare consumers have quite a different view of the issues concerning medical records online from the healthcare professionals. So, if you know of patient advocates who may be interested in participating here, please encourage them to. If you are patient advocate and I've not acknowledged you as such - please accept my apologies.

Who am I? I'm a medical practitioner working fulltime in IT and the Internet. I'm based in Cape Town, South Africa. The company that I work for, Sunesi, have developed and are about to take to market a new product in the diagnostic equipment arena. The .net business unit (in which I work) is in the process of launching two health portals aimed at South African Internet users.

Kind regards

David
