NAHIT’s Recommendations for the FDA’s Proposed Rule on Bar Coding for Human Drug Products

Require that the NDC number be included in the bar code label for all human drug products including prescription and over the counter drugs
Mandatory labeling of all human drug products for all package sizes, down to the unit-dose with a bar code that includes the NDC
Lot Number and Expiration Date included in the mandatory bar code label, within 5 years from the date of the final rule
Only existing symbologies utilized in healthcare with the capacity to include the NDC be used for the bar coded label
Only symbologies appropriate to the pharmaceutical packaging size and capable of being printed and scanned by existing and readily available commercial printing and scanning technology should be selected
No mandatory bar code labeling for medical devices at this time
