PricewaterhouseCoopers Identifies Top Seven Health Industry Trends of '07? The year ahead will be a watershed for the health industries as health savings accounts reach a tipping point, states act
where the
federal government hasn’t and pressure on pricing amid demand for transparency forces pharmaceutical companies, hospitals
and health
plans to rethink their strategies. For example, nearly one-quarter of Americans don’t believe that having an electronic health
record
will improve the quality of healthcare.
The Roulette Wheel: An Aid to Informed Decision Making For physicians and their patients to make informed decisions, they must not only have access to the best available information,
but
also must also understand what it means, as well as the possible consequences of the choices open to them. Like others, we
believe that
visual tools can be an extremely useful part of this process, particularly when they allow us to bypass the need to understand
numerical
probabilities, or to “translate” such numbers into artificial and often equally obscure surrogate “utilities”
[11,17–19]. The programmable
“roulette wheel”tool described in this paper
should allow patients and physicians to incorporate directly their own values about competing benefits and competing harms,
and thus lead to
choices that are most consistent with their aspirations and fears, as well as with the best available evidence, even as it
changes over
time.
New Journal: International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (IJBET) IJBET aims to advance and foster cutting edge research in the multi-disciplinary area of biomedical engineering and technology.
Medical science is rapidly incorporating advances in science and technology that are combining to produce more accurate diagnoses,
more
effective treatments with fewer side effects, and improved ability to prevent disease and provide superior quality healthcare.
Technologies Available for Licensing from NIH/FDA and Non-Profit Institutions Technologies related to rare diseases or conditions available for commercial licensing are listed under the related disease
or
condition. If you are a non-profit institution you can also have your technology included in this list.
