Computer-based Provider Order Entry Resources
One of the most exciting tools in our Clinical Decision Support (CDS) armamentarium is Computerized Physician
Order Entry (CPOE). Studies consistently confirm a 60-70% reduction of Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) in hospitals using CPOE. The number
of steps involved in the ordering and administration of medications (and consequent opportunities for human error) in hospital
settings is markedly reduced by CPOE. Patients are afforded added protection from inadvertent harm, and physicians benefit from a
reduction in their own exposure to liability for errors as a result of CPOE. Yet the processes of persuasion involved in practitioner
conversion to CPOE remains one of the most daunting challenges for hospitals and implementers of CDS healthcare information systems
with non-employed (voluntary) medical staffs. Short of legislative or enterprise mandate, the majority of healthcare organizations
(HCOs) encounter remarkably similar cultural and political obstacles that challenge even the most innovative champions of
CPOE.
A Primer on Physician Order Entry-- First Consulting Group --
September 2000
This guide is a primer for healthcare executives and trustees and provides a starter set of basic information.
While CPOE is used for ordering a number of different types of services, much of the information in this report focuses on medication
order entry, because of the current attention being focused on medication errors. The heart of the guide is organized around the two
critical success factors: selecting the system to support CPOE and the work of implementing the computerized process.
Computerized Physician Order Entry: A Look at the Vendor Marketplace and
Getting Started-- The LeapFrog Group -- December 2001
The purpose of the report is to help hospitals understand what vendors are in the CPOE marketplace. It focuses
on clinical decision support (CDS) tools in computerized physician order entry (CPOE) applications for the hospital. CDS tools are
just one of many important factors to consider in selecting a solution for your hospital. This information could be useful to
hospitals as they start a search for a CPOE solution. It in no way covers the necessary detail to substitute for a careful
exploration of a hospital’s environment, objectives, available software, and the experience of other hospitals who have
implemented these solutions.
Computerized Physician Order Entry in Community
Hospitals: Lessons from the Field-- First Consulting Group -- June 2003
This report reviews computerized physician order entry (CPOE) implementation approaches taken in ten different
community hospitals, as well as the observations of specialists from five CPOE software vendors who have assisted multiple hospitals.
The report also details how some community hospitals have tackled the changes surrounding incorporating CPOE into the complex process
of order management throughout the hospital. Practical advice is provided about how the hospitals built accountability, organized the
project, and designed and staged successful roll-outs.
